If you read one article today, make it this one: Tim Bray nails it (and mirrors my own opinion regarding a lot of past experiences I’ve had regarding enterprise IT and their stranglehold on developing new business capabilities) with the one sentence he highlights: The community of developers whose work you see on the Web, who probably don’t know what ADO or UML or JPA even stand for, deploy better systems at less cost in less time at lower risk than we see in the Enterprise. This is why we did a lot of in-house development when I was in the ISP space, even as it became subsumed by the telcos, and it’s why I will, one day, probably go back to tech for a while when folk see the light (though not for a few years yet, I hope).
