I’ve been a very happy Synology customer for over 15 years, but this piece of news (which echoes the Western Digital fracas from a couple of years ago) makes me wonder if I will keep recommending them.
The Synology software makes it dead easy to have encrypted cloud backups to Azure and mirror both my Dropbox and OneDrive contents locally, and those are just two of the features I have relied on over the years–many other people use a lot more of their core software, and pretty much everyone I know has a Plus model.
The TerraMaster F4-424 MAX, for instance, doesn’t do all of those things out of the box, and going custom would be a major pain even for me as I’m just running Proxmox and a bespoke Samba server there, treating it as a dedicated VM and media server. But maybe I should start hedging my bets…
