Rui Carmoexpod enables you to directly access an iPod’s or iPhone filesystem and extract music tracks from it (preserving “DRM”:Wikipedia:Digital_rights_management in the process but enabling you to retrieve stuff that you might have lost on your desktop).
Since it doesn’t allow for injecting new tracks it doesn’t fix my recurring gripe towards lack of proper manual management in iTunes, but it’s a starting point.
