It’s been a long while since I had any sort of advertising on the site, but I am now looking into now integrating EthicalAds as a way to support both the site and some of the projects I work on.
This harks back to the days when I used to run advertisements as a way to compare different ad networks (I used to do advertising analytics back in the early 2010s) and it’s going to be a bit of a nostalgia trip for me as well.
The “why” is simple: I have been running this site for over 20 years, and while I have always run it at a loss, and am very far from being a “professional” blogger, I have always tried to keep it running as a hobby and an escape from my day job.
However, my recent health concerns, all the uncertainty in the industry right now (and the world) have made me wary regarding all kinds of possible savings for a rainier day and trying to balance the budget is just plainly sane.
EthicalAds seems like a good way to try to nudge the balance out of the red without compromising either my principles or the user experience, so I’m giving it a shot.
As usual, I will be testing this integration for a while before I decide whether to keep it or not, but I am hopeful that it will be a good fit, and that it will not be too intrusive or annoying–especially in this day and age of ad blockers and privacy concerns. There are still other ways to support the site, of course.
