I don’t mention Acorn much these days, but I’ve been using it off and on since 2007 and it is a genius piece of work, delivering a lot of power in a very small (less than 150MB!) package.
Since Apple just acquired my current go-to image editor (Pixelmator) and they have a mixed record where it comes to acquisitions (i.e., goodness knows what they will do with it), I thought I’d mention that Acorn is still around and still being actively developed by Gus Mueller, who has been doing a great job of keeping it up to date with the latest macOS features while keeping the UI/UX very much like earlier versions of Photoshop (which, believe me, is a good thing).
Plus, much to my delight, the automation features are second to none, and you can script it using JavaScript or through Shortcuts to a pretty amazing degree–which means I am going to be replacing Pixelmator in the dozen or so quick actions that I have set up in Finder, and likely also in some weirder workflows like my recent Arcane wallpaper binge.
The fact that it is also temporarily on sale for $19.99 (down from $29.99) is just icing on the cake. I just wish there was an iOS version.
Disclaimer: I bought my copy off the App Store solely because it greatly minimizes Family Sharing shenanigans, and have no financial interest in the product or its developer. I just like it a lot.
