This wasn’t a shotgun wedding, but there were noises of draft legislation in the works and some industry buzz (including operator pressure) for a good while now, not to mention that it’s just plain common sense - I’ve been charging pretty much everything off USB for years (mostly by dint of avoiding using phones with pointlessly proprietary chargers).

Having Apple as one of the signers, however, doesn’t, as usual, imply any short-term changes to their hardware - a simple micro-USB dongle is more likely.
