I could not help but find it oddly telling that the president of the Authors’ Guild wrote that his job “…borders on quixotic…”. Then again he does write (also in the NYT, in an excerpt from his own book) that “According to scholars of linguistics, the relation between a word and its meaning is arbitrary. In proof, they point to pigs.[…]”, so there is certainly some leeway here where it concerns what he actually means by that (and, perhaps, where it pertains to pigs, or other animals). Maybe he honestly believes in his work. But what is patently obvious is that he (and the business “model” he espouses) is way behind the times. Also, I see no mention of the fact that audiobooks’ royalties also involve the voices that perform the recording, and that there is no sensible reason for the publisher to get a larger cut for those in the first place. But hey, he’s an author, not an economist, right?
