It took nearly four years for mobile phone technology to be able to handle Skype on general purpose devices (the first ones were shims that used standard tech and not the full Skype protocol). Of course, in the meantime the VoIP bubble burst quietly and without making any sort of dent on the telco industry, and the pie-in-the-sky folk will brush all of it off as inconsequential and focus on the next hype wave.
