The Acer Aspire One is a netbook device I actually bought for myself and returned a couple of weeks later, but that I still consider the best overall netbook available mid-2008.
Many people mistakenly held the belief that its Linux version was closed (no apparent way to get some devices to work, no kernel packages, etc.). However, it is a pretty much standard Fedora 8 with heavy modifications, and it is possible to run a lot of standard packages (provided you do not replace GTK or the kernel).
You can get at a terminal using Alt+F2
and sudo bash
to fiddle with
yum
repositories, and take it from there.
After a few tweaks, mine eventually looked like this:
This file contains all my customization notes and this is an
askpass
replacement I coded for usingssh-agent
on it. Neither are likely to be further updated.
Sadly, there seems to be no Windows XP version with SSD, and there are many complaints of poor SSD performance under Windows - all listed part numbers for Windows mention a standard disk drive, which makes it somewhat unappealing.
