Acer Aspire One

The Acer Aspire One is a netbook device I and returned a couple of weeks later, but that I still consider the best overall netbook available mid-2008.

Many people mistakenly held the belief that its version was closed (no apparent way to get some devices to work, no kernel packages, etc.). However, it is a pretty much standard 8 with heavy modifications, and it is possible to run a lot of standard packages (provided you do not replace GTK or the kernel).

You can get at a terminal using Alt+F2 and sudo bash to fiddle with yum repositories, and take it from there.

After a few tweaks, mine eventually looked like this:

This file contains all my customization notes and this is an askpass replacement I coded for using ssh-agent on it. Neither are likely to be further updated.

Sadly, there seems to be no version with SSD, and there are many complaints of poor SSD performance under - all listed part numbers for mention a standard disk drive, which makes it somewhat unappealing.
