Then check out Little Snitch, which has a Lite version and allows you to detect (and block) applications that have the annoying habit of “phoning home” without asking permission (and making your ADSL router fire up the link, etc.):
Note: OpenSnitch is a good Linux alternative that has both Ubuntu and Fedora packages available. The official Linux effort is now being developed in the open as littlesnitch-linux, with the eBPF components, shared Rust code and web UI published separately.
