I can replace Esc with Ctrl+C in vim, but if this is real then Apple has gone batshit insane, even if there are workarounds.
I actually use and rely upon that top row too much to feel comfortable with the idea of a touch bar. It’s true I’m typing this on an iPad soft keyboard, but come on, a MacBook Pro was until now meant to be used as a real computer, and that, for UNIX-centric folk like myself, means using a terminal — which in turn means having an Esc key, because the equivalent key combo (Ctrl+[) does not exist on a Portuguese keyboard.
