Just like Scalzi, I have both an iPad mini 4 and a Nexus 7, and I wholeheartedly agree with him regarding both form factor and user experience.
The Nexus, even the 2013 edition I got second-hand for developing a couple of apps (and which became my night-time ebook reader thanks to its great screen) is great, but not as polished, gentlemanly and rewarding as using the mini.
Regardless of build quality and form factor, I largely blame the user experience and app ecosystem for that. My Nexus will be getting an upgrade to Android 6, but that will hardly matter at this point (if ever).
