I call complete and utter bullshit. In order for a handset to be considered GSM compliant a few years back, it had to display exacty what the network told it to.
Everyone is getting this backwards. It’s not the network that’s supposed to be untrusted - although some carriers could do a better job of managing their SMS-C accesses and pushing vendors to improve on the age-old broken protocols - it’s the handset that’s untrusted.
