Actually, I think it is much simpler than what the article implies - VoIP died at its own hands due to hype, since it promised a lot of things that simply could not be done at the initial levels of technology. Plus I wouldn’t call a bunch of random companies that couldn’t even agree on the proper semantics of SIP a “revolution”. The irony, of course, is that most telcos with a plan are now using VoIP as part of their core networks and patiently removing circuit-switched approaches as the technology becomes reliable enough to do so - but not sooner (Full disclosure - I worked in IMS for quite a few years, and always thought the VoIP hype would end in tears - turns out I was right).
