Rui CarmoSteerMouse is a macOS utility that lets you freely customize buttons, wheels and cursor speed, and that has recently (in 2024) risen to fame due to the fact that Logitech began adding extraordinarily bloated and useless features to their otherwise quite decent mouse control software.
This uses effectively zero extra RAM and CPU power and is a fully native application, so the choice is pretty clear.
