Motto of the day: People match what they hear (no matter however inconsequential) to their own prejudices. Then they repeat it, plus the prejudices and without proper context.
(I couldn't find a suitable Garfield cartoon, but the gist of the thing is definetly furry, orange and extremely annoyed... at Mondays in general.)
